Black Friday, Christopher Macgowan, motorhomenews

20131127-183931.jpg

What is Black Friday? It’s a US tradition that has been delivering shoppers an early Christmas gift in the form of bargains galore from retailers keen to get their tills ringing for many years. On Black Friday, the prices of hundreds of thousands of items are slashed and the most committed shoppers queue up outside their favourite stores and malls for hours to make sure they snap up the best deals. Discounts are also available online for those not wanting to brave the in-store scrum.

The latest data shows that 225 million Americans shopped on Black Friday in 2011, racking up a bill of $11.4 billion.

When is it? It happens on the first Friday after Thanksgiving, so this year it’s Friday 29 November. It started off as a one day-only event. However, some big retailers regularly start their sales on Thanksgiving itself – Walmart’s official Black Friday sale kicks off at 8pm on Thursday 28 November, although this year it has already started to discount some items. Similarly, rivals such as Toys R’Us, Best Buy and Target have also started to cut the price of some popular items.

Are there any Black Friday deals in the UK? Yes. The big retailers in the UK have really been getting into the swing of things for the past four years and Brits spent £200 million on Black Friday last year. This year, Amazon.co.uk will have 2,000 deals – the most ever – which it says will save Christmas shoppers millions of pounds. The average discount, according to the retailer, will be 40%, with items on offer including One Direction signed albums, Nespresso coffee machines, Canon cameras and LeapFrog LeapPad 2 bundles.

Black Friday in the UK will actually be a week-long event at Amazon between Monday 25 November and Sunday 1 December, with extra savings scheduled for Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December. Other big retailers that will have Black Friday deals include Debenhams, Asda (the UK arm of Walmart) and Apple (which discounts ‘re-conditioned’ items).

If the US Black Friday deals are better, can I buy from the US and get items sent to me in the UK? It depends on the retailer. Some will let you order online from the UK and charge you international postage. However, if they have a presence in the UK, you’ll most likely have to wait for the UK sale (if there is one).

However, to get around this problem, some tech companies have sprung up to offer international shoppers a helping hand. For example, BundleBox.com gives its users a personal US parcel forwarding address they can use when ordering online. So no matter where they live they can shop from any US website, using the BundleBox delivery address. Once the purchase gets to BundleBox, it is repacked (to get rid of surplus packaging and help keep postage costs down) and then sent to you. Multiple items can also be bundled together. When you’re ready, and Bundlebox has received everything you’ve ordered, you can book the shipment of your purchases to the final destination (the company will also hold items for up to 30 days, free of charge). And you can choose the delivery method. The company uses Fedex but you can opt for either express delivery, which takes two to three days, or the regular delivery service that takes up to five days. Users have to register but the US delivery address becomes available immediately. There’s a $15 subscription fee, which gets refunded with your first shipment. Postage costs are payable separately.

Do I have to pay tax on anything I buy from the US? Yes but exactly what type and how much varies considerably. Sales tax has to be paid on purchases in the US, and usually isn’t included in the selling price – something that often catches foreign visitors out when they get to the till. The rate at which it is payable varies from state to state but mostly hovers around 8 or 9%.

If you’re importing items to the UK, or bringing them back from a holiday, you might also have to pay import tax (also known as Customs Duty, which applies to goods over a certain value produced from outside the EU) if you exceed your duty free allowance. Currently the taxman allows each person to bring home up to £390 worth of goods (other than alcohol or cigarettes) including gifts, perfume and souvenirs. However that limit is reduced to £270 if arriving by private plane or private boat – so Roman Abramovich beware.

If you buy something that exceeds the limit, such as a laptop, you should declare the item when you pass through customs at the airport and pay the Duty. You’ll be charged a proportion of the value depending on the type of item (typically another 8 or 9% of the purchase price). Websites such as dutycalculator.com can give you a good idea of what you’ll pay. If you are buying from the US and having your goods delivered, the retailer may charge you the import tax upfront or once the item arrives in the UK Royal Mail may ask you to pay tax before delivery is made. Services such as BundleBox allow you to pre-pay any customs duty that may apply.
If you fail to declare the purchases that tax is due on, you could be penalised.

Is it worth flying to the States to save on my Christmas shopping? That depends on what you’re buying. A last-minute return flight from London to New York can be booked through travelworld.co.uk for £359 (incl taxes). If your shopping list includes lots of electronics – laptops, smartphones or tablets – you could save some serious money.

Are there any other bargain shopping days before Christmas? Yes. The biggest is Cyber Monday – also known as Mega Monday – which takes place on Monday 2 December 2013. It is expected to be the single busiest day for online shopping throughout the UK so keep your eyes peeled for adverts.

Motorway closed after motorhome crash allows dogs to escape.

The M40 motorway was closed after a lorry jack-knifed and several dogs escaped from a motorhome following a crash.

Several dogs escaped onto a motorway after a motorhome broken down on the hardshoulder was hit by a lorry. The incident on the M40 northbound carriageway, near Banbury, Oxfordshire, saw all three lanes of the carriageway being shut for most of Saturday from 5.40am as the lorry jack-knifed. Southbound traffic was also disrupted after several dogs escaped from the wreckage. The motorhome contained 12 dogs and three people.

The people inside the motorhome were left injured by the crash, with one suffering a broken leg. Inspector Helen Thomas, of West Mercia Police, said: “A call was received at 5.40am reporting a collision on the M40 motorway northbound between junctions 11 and 12. A heavy goods vehicle collided with a motorhome which was stationary on the hard shoulder while it was awaiting recovery. It contained three people and 12 dogs. The HGV jack-knifed blocking all three lanes of the carriageway. A full closure from junction 11 northbound followed and ambulance, fire brigade and highways attended. A number of the dogs escaped from the vehicle and ran off causing problems on the southbound carriageway. Three people suffered injuries; two minor and a third sustaining a broken leg.”

The northbound carriageway was expected to remain closed until Saturday afternoon.

One of the dogs – a male black and white Cardigan Corgi – was initially unaccounted for but was traced safe and well by the owners some hours after the crash, following an appeal on social media sites. The condition of the remaining dogs is not known.

Sources: Press Association The Daily Telegraph.

Note by Christopher Macgowan: Obviously I only know as much about this incident as is reported in this story but, once again, I am reminded what a dangerous place the hard shoulder is and how very much worse this could have been. If we break down on the motorway it is essential to safely get over the barrier and out of harms way. I am speculating here but I imagine the occupants were uncertain to know what to do for the best with twelve dogs on board and in light of their dreadful experience – having twelve loose dogs on board perhaps was not a good plan.

The Caravan Club was promoting its overseas travel service at the 2013 Caravan and Motorhome Show held at the NEC in October and was delighted with the number of enquiries and bookings it received which realised a 27% increase on the previous year for the same period.

Ken Faulkner, Head of Travel Services for The Caravan Club, says “The Club’s Continental Caravanning brochure is now launched to coincide with the Show and the booking system also ‘goes live’ during the event. These booking figures are very encouraging for the industry. Not only is carvanning proving to be as popular as ever, but more and more caravanners are venturing further and further afield. The Caravan Club is delighted to be able to offer some unbeatable ferry offers and 209 destinations throughout Europe.”
Faulkner continues, “Some Club members have previously expressed concerns about taking their outfits abroad, so The Club has introduced First Time Abroad overseas packages, designed to help members on their first holiday overseas, ensuring that their first trip is easy and worry-free.”

Three of these packages are available in 2014 and include overseas driving tips and practical driving experiences, replicating real-life scenarios, followed by an escorted trip to the Continent. The Club also offers assistance with ferry bookings and Red Pennant overseas holiday insurance for its members, so altogether an all-round overseas package is available.
At the Show, Saturday proved to be the busiest day of the week with people flocking to The Caravan Club stand to meet Caravan Club members and ‘Allo ‘Allo stars Vicki Michelle, Arthur Bostrom and Kim Hartman, who are all keen caravanners and motorhomers themselves. They were more than happy to meet Club members and Show visitors to chat and sign autographs, relaying some of their touring experiences, including trips they’d made overseas.

Vicki Michelle, who played amorous waitress, Yvette, in the sitcom, is a motorhome enthusiast who travels regularly on the continent with her husband. She also appeared in The Caravan Club’s short film “Overseas Touring Made Easy”, produced to help alleviate members’ concerns and apprehensions about travelling abroad. Vicki has commented that “Taking a motorhome on a trip overseas for the first time seems fairly daunting but it is great fun and much easier than anyone could imagine. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.”

Greetham Retreat Certificated Location (CL), in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, has been awarded first-place in The Caravan Club’s CL of the Year Awards 2013, voted for by The Caravan Club’s one million members and presented at the House of Commons. Owners Rob and Jeanette Folwell received their award from Mr Gordon Marsden MP, Shadow Minister for Transport, during The Club’s annual Parliamentary Reception on Monday, 18 November.

Certificated Locations are privately-owned, maximum five-van sites found across the UK, many in idyllic and remote locations on farms, country estates and beside inns, which can provide a valuable, additional income stream for local communities. These awards are presented at the House of Commons in recognition of the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act (1960) which enables The Caravan Club to grant certificates to landowners to operate CLs.

Set in four acres of tranquil grounds with wildlife ponds, wildflower meadows and woodland, Greetham Retreat opened in 2011 following Rob’s retirement from the Police Force a few years earlier, where he and Jeanette located to Lincolnshire. The couple built the CL site themselves during the autumn of 2010, planting some 650 trees. It has hard standing pitches and one alternative grass pitch and includes a Club standard service point, heated shower and WC room.

The site is situated in the centre of Lincolnshire and is within easy reach of the east coast with its many sandy beaches and other parts of the county, including the medieval and vibrant city of Lincoln with its magnificent Cathedral and Castle. A short drive away is the famous aviation heritage venues of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, displaying Lancaster Bombers and the Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes from WWII.

Of their win, Rob and Jeanette say, “We are so proud of our CL and amazed at the generosity of The Caravan Club members who have visited and voted for us. We thank you all so very much, this Award really means so much to us both.”

Low Moor Head CL in Longtown, Cumbria, has been awarded second place in the Competition. A former dairy farm, owners Owen and Adele Taylor, purchased the site in 2002 and decided to set up the family run site in 2005. Situated in the hamlet of Easton, with a woodland backdrop of Heathery Belt Wood, the local town of Longtown is situated just six miles from Carlisle which is steeped in Roman history, being the gateway to both the Scottish borders and England. Some three miles away is the world famous blacksmith’s shop at Gretna Green, founded in 1754 and renowned for runaway marriages.

The site is open all year round and all pitches are hard standing. Toilet and shower facilities are available and super pitch hook-ups have recently been installed incorporating individual electric hook-ups, fresh water and a waste water point.

Of the business, Owen says, “We researched facilities at other CL sites and received customer feedback as we are very aware of the importance of taking care of the environment. In fact, we have gained the Cumbria Business Environment Network Gold Award having implemented and Environmental Policy of recycling, composter, the planting of trees, shrubs and plants to encourage insects and wildlife. We also think it is important to provide information on other local businesses in the area and have set up an information centre.”

East Fortune CL in North Berwick has been awarded third place in the prestigious Awards. It has been open since 2002 and is owned and run by Grant and Jane who are the fourth generation of the Brand family to farm East Fortune Farm, which extends to just under 100 acres and boasts an award winning pedigree Hampshire Down sheep flock.

The site is a family run affair with well maintained facilities and visitors are encouraged to explore and enjoy the walkways around the farm as well as meeting the animals if they wish. Beautiful local beaches and 22 golf courses are within easy reach and the town of East Lothian close by is the home of Concorde, the National Museum of Flight. Sea fishing and pond fishing at Markle Fisheries, only five miles from the CL, is one of East Lothian’s most beautiful and popular seaside towns, traditionally known as ‘The Biarritz of the North’ and hosts the award winning tourist attraction, the Scottish Seabird Centre. With plenty of historical attractions, shops, bars and restaurants nearby, just a 30-minute train ride will find you in the city centre of Edinburgh.

Of the business, Jane says, “We didn’t know anything about CLs until my father, himself a keen caravanner for many years, highlighted the potential and we decided to investigate it as a diversification for the farm. We love welcoming visitors and there’s nothing better than hearing them say what a fantastic holiday they had at our home and that they plan to return soon.”
The site has also, in the past, been awarded three regional commendations for CL of the Year for the Scotland region, in 2004, 2010 and 2012.

Caravan Club Chairman, Grenville Chamberlain, commented, “Access to The Caravan Club’s unique 2,500-strong CL network is a huge benefit of membership and each and every CL is a gem in the jewelled crown of the overall sites network. CL owners are to be congratulated on their commitment to providing our members with a warm welcome and an exceptional place to enjoy their caravanning as well as the massive contribution they play in boosting local tourism economies.”

For all those planning to book Caravan Club sites for the forthcoming season, take note and remember the 4th of December, as this is when 2014 pitches will go on sale. Navigating the Club’s website has been made easier due to various improvements and there is also the option for customers to book both online or via the Advanced Booking Service. Prices will also be clearly visible throughout the booking process, with the Caravan Club insisting that they will be fixed for the duration of the season.

This contrasts with the Camping and Caravanning Club’s recently introduced flexible pricing scheme, which will see quieter sites costing less and busier sites costing more.

New for 2014, the Club has also introduced more sites. The recently added Wooda Farm Holiday Park and Stonehaven Queen Elizabeth Park Caravan Club Site in Cornwall and Stonehaven respectively, provide a platform for fresh exploration. While both resorts are family friendly, Wooda Farm Holiday Park offers picturesque views and acres of green land, while Stonehaven in Queen Elizabeth Park features everything from a quaint local area with plenty of restaurants and shops, to an Olympic-size swimming pool and a golf course.

Similarly to previous years, The Caravan Club has a series of offers, which they hope will whet the appetites of potential customers.

With the ‘Midweek discount’ offer standing alongside the popular ‘Kids for a penny’ offer – available at selected sites during school holidays – the Caravan Club, who promise to offer more discounts in the next few weeks, are striving to make their holidays more affordable than ever before.

While bookings can be made beyond December 4, it is highly recommended to make them as close to this as physically possible to make sure you get your favourite pitch in high season.

The government finalises a programme of events to honour an epic period of history throughout 2014.

The plans are being coordinated the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Maria Miller, supported by the Prime Minister’s Special Representative for the centenary project, Andrew Murrison, who will present Cabinet with an update on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said:

Remembrance Day is an important day to pay our respects to our Armed Forces and the sacrifices they have made for our country throughout the ages and across the globe. The nation owes them a debt and I hope today everyone will take the time to reflect upon that.

Next year we will commemorate one of the biggest sacrifices our Forces ever made as we mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. We have already announced some of the ways in which the government will be leading the tributes next year, from ensuring that school children learn about this important part of our history to protecting the memorial in towns and villages around the country which honour those who gave their lives to funding for the new First World War Galleries which will open at the Imperial War Museum London next Summer. This week Cabinet will be discussing our plans to make sure they are a fitting way to commemorate all the heroes of the First World War.

The government has contributed over £50 million of funding to support commemoration activities. The plans announced so far include:

A national series of commemorative events, starting on 4 August 2014 with: a service for Commonwealth leaders at Glasgow Cathedral; an event at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission St Symphorien Military Cemetery in Mons, Belgium; a candlelit vigil at Westminster Abbey.

Commemorative paving stones to be laid in communities where Victoria Cross recipients of the First World War were born. The first paving stone will be laid on 23 August 2014 marking the exact date that the first Victoria Crosses were won.

A £5.3 million educational programme providing the opportunity for 2 students and a teacher from every state school in the country to visit First World War battlefields and undertake research on people local to their school who fought in the war.

A Christmas Day ‘Truce’ football match on the battlefields of Flanders to commemorate the anniversary of British and German soldiers ceasing fighting to play football in no man’s land.

2,500 local war memorials to be given the opportunity to win listed building status, reflecting their historical special interest, and Liverpool War Memorial to be upgraded to a Grade I listed building.
Further projects announced include:

£34 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund, including a new £6 million community project fund to enable young people working in their communities to conserve, explore and share local heritage of the First World War.

Up to £1 million from the National Heritage Memorial Fund to support HMS Caroline, the last surviving warship from the Battle of Jutland. The ship will have a secure future in Belfast, where thousands of people will be able to visit her and learn about her unique role in the First World War.

Audience figures for the fourth series achieved a consolidated average of 11.8 million viewers – making it the highest-rated drama on television in 2013. ‘Downton Abbey’ also broke records in the US earlier this year with the finale of series three beating all network and cable competition to become the highest-rating programme that evening on American television. The series, which aired on PBS’s Masterpiece, a co-producer with Carnival Films, was watched by a total of 24 million viewers.

The series, which is set in the 1920s and produced by Carnival Films, part of NBCUniversal International Television Production, made its debut on ITV in 2010 and has since been sold to more than 220 territories and watched by an estimated global audience of 120 million people.

The fifth series will once again be written by Julian Fellowes and executive produced by Gareth Neame, the managing director of Carnival, together with Liz Trubridge and Fellowes.

Viewers can look forward to the return of ‘Downton Abbey’ on Christmas Day, with a two-hour feature episode which will see Shirley MacLaine reprise her role as Martha Levinson and Paul Giamatti join the cast as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold, alongside all the much-loved regular characters of the show.
