Near Ashbourne in Derbyshire and nestled within a pine plantation, this 115 pitch full facility site does it for me. I love the dedicated bespoke pathway down to the reservoir.

Chatsworth Park must be one of the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s most popular sites and even on a chilly weekend in January it is a total delight.

Derbyshire-based motorhome dealer, Geoff Cox, has been awarded the title ‘Best Brand Ambassador’ by motorhome manufacturer Adria.

The awards were held recently at the launch of the 2019 Adria range of new models. The dealer took the title because of its dedication to promoting the two Adria brands – Adria and Sun Living.

“With the consistent commitment to the Adria and Sun Living brands over several seasons, we recognise that Geoff Cox Leisure works incredibly hard to support both brands and offer a high level of customer service,” said an Adria spokesman. “With regular support at outdoor shows and events, Geoff Cox helps promote Adria and Sun Living to a high standard and it is very evident that they are worthy of Adria’s Best Brand Ambassador award.”

The judging criteria for the awards were based on various levels of support that dealers offer, plus their investment in advertising, outdoor shows and new staff.

“I am so proud of the achievements of our team and would like to congratulate them on receiving this award and for their hard work and dedication,” said Gavin Cox. “We are also grateful to our customers for their loyalty, continued support and for ‘flying with us’.”

Burrs Country Park and Castleton CAMC sites – and a bit of drama.

TOP: The scenery and walks around the town of Castleton are stunning.

SECOND: Burrs Country Park.

THIRD: History is well preserved at Burrs.

BOTTOM: Well; the road was closed for goodness sake!!

It was only three degrees Centigrade with a bitter wind and a tiny sprinkling of snow but my stay this week at the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s sites in Bury, Lancashire (Burrs Country Park) and Castleton in Derbyshire was quite simply brilliant. I am a great one for my creature comforts and both sites have the latest of everything and on both sites my set-up time was a mere eight minutes despite one set-up at Burrs being at eleven o’clock at night in a snow storm.

Castleton is a tourist trap and has wonderful walks all around but the side effect for me is the tiny town can support six pubs and two restaurants. The Master Plan was for Faye and I to embark on our usual Dry February but my side of the bargain fell apart in Castleton so Faye is ahead of me in will power and smugness.

The A623 was closed but I never take any notice of those signs because mostly they are out of date. The weather was cold but dry – but on this occasion I was partially caught out due to heavy lifting equipment removing trucks and indeed closing the road. A truck in front of me had a major drama turning round but I took a couple left tuns into deepest Derbyshire countryside and was soon back on track. There was a slightly anxious moment when I came face to face with a seventeen tonne FedEx delivery truck on a single track road. We had a Camp David meeting in the mud between our two vehicles and the upshot was I put my reversing skills to work – such as they are.

Having spent Christmas in Manchester with daughter Anna and her family I left behind today the flooding in Manchester itself – far more serious flooding elsewhere of course – and set off on one of my favourite drives along the Snake Pass in Derbyshire in the general direction of Sheffield. It was almost impossible to comprehend such a glorious day today (Sunday) having had such downpours on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

My heart goes out to those families flooded yet again in Cumbria and Lancashire and those in York and Leeds who have been evacuated. What a dire end to their Christmas.

I wish you a very Happy New Year if you are on your travels or your house is unaffected and I wish you better days ahead if your life has been turned upside down by the weather.

PS. Might your new year resolution be to subscribe to my motorhome e-newspaper which is FOC and published on Sunday evenings? I do hope so. It is at http://paper.li/motorhomenews/1394765219 and when it pops up there is a box for your email address on the right hand side – no more information required! Many thanks!! (Forever the optimist.)

Chatsworth, Chatsworth Park, Derbyshire, The Caravan Club

I am at the Caravan Club’s Chatsworth Park site in Derbyshire. Quite apart from being one of my many favourites, it is hugely popular with members as well. It is open all year, has 120 pitches all of which are hard standing but of course it is its setting that wins hearts and minds. It is in an old walled garden on the Chatsworth Estate surrounded by beautiful countryside and, of course, Chatsworth itself which is stunning. A “private” door with your own key lets you into the estate direct from the site!

I was late arriving so, by way of a change, I walked back down the entrance road to the site into Baslow and had an excellent evening at Rowley’s Restaurant and Bar.

It really does not get much better than that!!
