“In the most romantic part of the Moselle Valley, where the river curves between two hiking paradises – Eifel and Hunsrück – lies the old town of Cochem. Even the Romans sang the praises of this remarkable landscape. It is true – a few things have changed since then, but the attraction has remained because the past centuries – above all the Middle Ages – have left their marks here.”

I used to think Cochem on the Mosel was a tad too touristic for my personal taste but the mistake I was making was not looking beyond the main street facing the river which is indeed full of restaurants and shops selling stuff you really don’t want to buy.

On that score I learned a harsh lesson years ago when I was in Kuala Lumpur and saw a simply magnificent Elvis Presley t-shirt which was a full colour photo of the Great Man screen printed onto a silk shirt. I had to have it. It looked so good in crowded bustling KL. To my disappointment I looked absolutely ridiculous wearing it walking to the pub where I live in Felsted. Some things simply do not travel.

On this German trip I was able to spend more time in Cochem and found it to be a real jewel – highly recommended!

Saarburg on the Mosel

The list of towns worth visiting on the Mosel is endless and Saarburg is right up there in the top five in my opinion. Not large, just a 6700 population, and sporting Germany’s only active bronze bell foundry. The town started life in 964 (the American tourists I met in the main square could hardly get their heads round that) and has in turn been occupied by Luxembourg and French troops over the years.

It is a delight to visit and followers of this blog know that one of my main loves when travelling is finding a street bar and watching the world wag by.  Saarburg scores “dix points”.

Bernkastel on the Mosel, or Bernkastel-Kues to give it the full name, is almost beyond beautiful and is a delight to visit with its old quarter and numerous excellent restaurants. Am so enjoying this holiday along the Rhine and the Mosel.

Very much enjoying my amble along the Rhine.

Visiting Cologne, Koblenz, Boppard, Remagen and Mainz.

And then later working my way back along the Mosel.

I have been looking through this year’s photographs to decide on my favourite 2014 location not just for the scenery but for the whole experience of the journey, the people, the events and the intangible “wow factor”.

And the winner is Zell on the Mosel in Germany where I stayed at Campingpark Zell Mosel in Zell-Kaimt.

Breathtaking – and on this sub-zero December day it looks even more tempting now than it did at the time.

I lived in the Midlands for over twenty years and during that time became absorbed with the UK canal system and narrowboats in general. They were but one of the driving forces behind the industrial revolution and after years of pain and neglect are now an important part of our tourist and leisure industries. I lived near the Hatton Locks flight in Warwick and today one of my long list of favourite CLs is in Leighton Buzzard next to a narrowboat marina – and an excellent pub.

Here on the Mosel, locks and barges are an altogether bigger proposition with some fantastic design and engineering deployed.

I guess my next step up is to visit the Suez and Panama canals!

Trittenheim is near Trier in Germany and on the Mosel and just over the border from Luxembourg. It is one of my favourite parts of Germany because it is firstly beautiful, secondly a wine lover’s paradise and thirdly in a general area which is almost unbelievably motorhome friendly.

Wikipedia offers a slightly more prosaic description: “Trittenheim on the Middle Moselle is an Ortsgemeinde – a municipality belonging to a Verbandsgemeinde, a kind of collective municipality – in the Trier-Saarburg district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.”

I think everyone knows how much I like the Mosel!!

Staying in Zell at Campingpark Zell Mosel, 56856 Zell-Kaimt, proved a delight and just a ten minute walk across the river – actually over a footbridge to be precise – took me right into the town.

Bernkastel is a delight in the Mosel valley.

It has a dedicated daytime motorhome parking spot right in the town.

Was earlier in the month in The Mosel Valley in south west Germany. It is beautiful and the Mosel itself is one of the longest tributaries of the Rhine. In Germany you are talking between Trier and Koblenz but of course both Luxembourg and France get in on the act.

Wall to wall vineyards, boats, barges, railways and masses of places welcoming motorhomes.
